When is Children's Day?
In Germany, there are two dates that are commonly referred to as Children's Day:
- International Children's Day: 1st June
- World Children's Day: 20th September
Whilst 1st June looks back on a long tradition, World Children's Day in September stands particularly under the banner of children's rights.
Why does Germany have two Children's Days?
The fact that two Children's Days are celebrated in Germany has historical reasons.
The International Children's Day on 1st June was observed in the former GDR and remains well known to many families to this day. The World Children's Day on 20th September was introduced in the Federal Republic of Germany. After reunification, both dates were retained and continue to be celebrated.
