Finding the Right Bra Size: How to Take Your Measurements

To find the correct bra size, it is important to take two measurements first: the underbust and the bust. The underbust is measured directly beneath the bust, whilst the bust is measured at the fullest point of the chest. Using these measurements, the correct bra size can be determined with the help of our size guide or calculator.

Sizing, fit, and comfort can vary considerably between brands, so it is always worth taking your measurements again before making a purchase. A well-fitting bra can be recognised by the absence of pressure marks, the bust being fully enclosed within the cups, and the underbust band sitting firmly in place without digging in.

Sister sizes – alternative sizes when your bra doesn't fit

It can happen that you struggle to find the ideal fit – even after taking all the necessary measurements and determining the correct bra size. Rest assured, however, as this is far from uncommon. If you find that your bra does not fit correctly, it is important to identify the cause.

If the underbust band is too loose or too tight, or if the cup is too large or too small, sister sizes may offer a solution. They work as follows:

  • If the bra feels too loose beneath the bust, choose a smaller band size and go up one cup size. For example, if you measured 75D, try 70E instead.
  • If the bra feels too tight beneath the bust, choose a larger band size and go down one cup size. For instance, instead of 70D, you could try a bra size of 75C.
  • If the cup is too large or too small, adjust your cup size by one up or down whilst keeping the same underbust band size. Using the 70D example, you could try 70C or 70E instead.

The perfect fit: how your bra should sit

  • Your bra fits correctly when it stays in place during wear without digging in or causing pressure at any point.
  • For a secure hold, it is important that the cups fully enclose the bust. Your bra should also sit at the same height at the front and back.
  • The straps should run parallel or in a slight V-shape across the back.
  • It is also important that the bust sits comfortably within the cups, even when you move your arms or upper body.

Signs that your bra does not fit correctly

How to put on a bra correctly

Now that you know how bra sizes are calculated and how a bra should fit, we'll show you how to put one on correctly.

  • Always fasten new bras on the middle row of hooks, so you have room to adjust if your measurements change over time
  • Position your bust in the cups so that they enclose it perfectly
  • Adjust your straps individually until they sit comfortably and provide adequate support — they should be firm but not too tight
  • The underbust band should sit straight and parallel to the floor

Different bra styles for different bust shapes

The wide variety of bra styles reflects the unique diversity of the female form, enabling women to find bras that are not only comfortable but also suited to their individual needs and different bust shapes. There is an abundance of options specifically designed to accentuate, shape, and support various bust shapes. Below you will find information on the most common bra styles:

  • Underwire bra – this classic bra features underwires integrated into the cups, helping to support and lift the bust from below. The cups may be padded, lined, or moulded.
  • Wireless bra – this bra has no underwires integrated. It is particularly recommended if you find traditional metal underwires uncomfortable.
  • Bustier – this style is wonderfully soft and, thanks to its high stretch content, adapts perfectly to your bust.
  • Balconette bra – this bra style features a low, straight-cut neckline that lifts the bust and creates a fuller décolletage.
  • Triangle bra – a bra with triangular cups, typically unpadded and wireless, offering a natural look and feel.
  • Minimiser bra – particularly well suited to larger cup sizes. Soft cups are often used here, creating the appearance of a more streamlined silhouette.
  • Push-up bra – designed to lift and visually enhance the bust, often featuring padded cups with an integrated push-up effect.
  • Bralette – a lightweight, wireless bra designed primarily for comfort. Ideal for small to medium bust sizes and can even be worn as a top.
  • Soft bra – a wireless bra crafted primarily from soft material, making it exceptionally comfortable for everyday wear.
  • Bra-shirt – combines the functions of a bra and a vest, covering the torso whilst providing bust support and shaping.
  • Sports bra – supports the bust during physical activity with a secure hold that minimises movement. Typically made from breathable and elastic materials.

To ensure a perfectly fitting bra, it is important to determine the correct size, understand what a proper fit looks like, and be aware of the different bra styles best suited to your bust shape. An incorrect bra size or a poorly fitting bra can not only be uncomfortable but may also lead to health issues over time.

It is therefore well worth investing the time and care needed to find the perfect bra, ensuring lasting comfort and support. In our shop, you will find a wide range of bras for different bust sizes and shapes.
